Who was in the September 2024 box?

And we round off the journey with a vibrant stop in Barcelona (ES).

Pécs - Hungary

Anna Varga

During our road trip through Hungary, Jerry met an exceptionally talented barista in Pécs.

Not only does she brew amazing coffee, but she also creates incredible art that blends seamlessly with the vibrant coffee culture.

Her unique style and passion for both art and coffee make her a true gem in the heart of Pécs.

We’re excited to have you featured!

For those who may not know, can you introduce yourself and tell us a little about your art and coffee bar in Pécs?

We (me and my boyfriend, Erik) moved to Pécs 2 years ago.

In March this year, we had an opportunity to have our own coffee shop, so we took the chance and started it.

We did the preparations while both of us had a full-time job.

Therefore I haven’t really had time for art during this period of my life.

After we started the café, things changed.

I always had my drawings and paintings, but I had never showcased them before.

This was the first time that others, beyond just a few people, could see my work.

You’re an artist and a barista—what do you think is the most creative part of coffee making?

I enjoy every part of it because I'm making something by hand for someone, but if I have to choose, it's the latte art.

Because this is the first thing customers notice, even before tasting it.

Also, pouring a good latte art is pretty exciting for me every single time.

What’s the story behind combining art and coffee?

How do these two passions influence each other?

It's a self-reinforcing process.

Whatever I start, I try to find my own art in it.

I wanted to share as much of myself, of ourselves, as possible with the guests.

That's why the loyalty card was created; it's one of my works, and in addition to the coffee, I can give it to the guests.

We also held workshops where guests could engage in creative activities.

We've had several pottery workshops, and there will be painting sessions as well, in which I’ll also assist the instructor.

What technique do you prefer?

Mainly acrylic, but I also enjoy working with charcoal.

Do you follow a daily routine when it comes to creating your art, or is it more spontaneous?

The creative urge comes spontaneously, but most of my ideas come while I'm in the café.

I like to draw my boyfriend's face.

Are there any places where we can see and buy your work?

No, but I plan to have my own exhibition in the near future.

I visited Pécs recently, which may be my favorite city in Hungary.

Do you have a favorite local spot where you grab a coffee or snack when you’re not working?

I only have a few ones.

I like the vibe of Block Coffee Room.

And if we wanna grab a snack, we usually go to Pizzaklub.

"I feel very special about this opportunity because it was truly my first public expression, and it's a big feedback that encourages me to continue developing my artistic side.

So thanks!"

Duif

A specialty coffee roaster who, much like the pigeons he resembles, is always on the move.

At every edition of ACF, he pops up at a different stand, bringing fresh, carefully sourced beans.

A firm believer that art and coffee are the perfect combination, he infuses creativity into every cup he brews.

His quick, bird-like energy and ability to deliver unique flavors have made him a beloved figure in the coffee scene, always leaving his artistic touch before flying off to the next adventure.

Can you briefly introduce yourself?

Hi,

I’m Hugo, 28 years young and passionate about many things.

My main loves include specialty coffee, skateboarding, and hip hop.

Each of these interests fuels my creativity and inspires me a lot!

In your opinion, what’s the biggest myth or misunderstanding about specialty coffee?

In my opinion, the biggest myth about specialty coffee is that it’s solely about the product itself how it’s brewed or the specific beans used.

While those factors are important, I believe that the experience of enjoying specialty coffee is much more about the moment, the setting, and how you savor it.

What’s your favorite part of the coffee roasting process, and why?

I love cuppings because I'm always pleasantly surprised by a new roast or exploring new coffees; it never gets boring.

Can you tell us about the art part of Duif?

For me, specialty coffee is a catalyst for creativity and new ideas.

It provides endless opportunities to learn and explore.

With our brand, we collaborate with local artists, giving them a platform to showcase their talents.

Each is our start for inspiration.

And I’m excited to see where this journey takes us next.

Your logo is unique.

What’s the story or meaning behind it?

My last name, "van Duivenboden," is connected to post pigeons, and I've been affectionately called "Duif" my whole life.

This inspired me to name my brand after "Duif," symbolizing the spirit of bringing people together through coffee.

Just as pigeons convey messages. :)

Apeldoorn used to be famous for the Kanaalconcerten by the canal.

Is there a type of music you like to listen to while roasting your coffee

Mainly Hip hop and Jazz.

Do you have a favorite local spot where you grab a coffee or snack when you’re not roasting?

At home - or out of town.

I love to travel for coffee.

Slowmov

SlowMov is a specialty coffee roastery and café in Barcelona’s Gràcia district.

Founded by François and Carmen, it combines high-quality coffee with sustainability, offering deliveries by cargo bike and using biodegradable bags.

With a focus on slow, mindful coffee experiences, SlowMov roasts its beans on-site and hosts workshops for coffee enthusiasts.

It’s a go-to spot for locals and visitors seeking great coffee in a cozy, eco-friendly atmosphere.

What inspired you to start SlowMov,

and how has your journey evolved since then?

Hello!

What inspired us to create SlowMov was the observation of slow processes that require concentration and give good results.

We call it SlowMov because we believe in slow movement, which can change things.

What’s one piece of advice you wish you had when you first started roasting coffee?

Be patient!

Is there a particular country/region you’re currently excited about sourcing from?

Ethiopia, Yirgacheffe because it has fascinating coffees, and India because we love its culture.

What’s the most interesting or unique coffee origin you’ve worked with?

Eugenioides coffee species, which is the ancestor of Arabica coffee, with a unique and bright flavor, is coming soon in SlowMov

We’ve seen some great collaborations with artists for your packaging.

Can you share more about your packaging design?

We have collaborated with the illustrator and ceramist @naimonpaper in the past and the current packaging also comes from the hands of the local graphic designer specializing in sustainability Nuria Vila.

Since 2018 our packaging has been compostable.

Do you have a favorite local spot where you grab a coffee or snack when you’re not roasting?

Our own coffee shop that is around the corner ;)

La Sagrada Familia is still being built after more than a century.

Do you have a coffee roast or blend that’s taken time and patience to perfect, just like this iconic cathedral?

For us, a coffee bean is like a visitor from a different place.

The roaster learns to know it, talks to it, and gradually discovers it, thus discovering what each coffee bean has to offer us.

It often happens that the best roast of that coffee appears a few weeks later and shines for a while before disappearing, like a star.

If you could share a cup of coffee with anyone, who would it be and why?

I would like to share a cup of coffee with the farmer who produces the coffee we drink.

Most of the time they don’t have the opportunity to try their coffee in espresso.

"Thanks to you"

Awaken

We’re excited to finally have them in the box!
This coffee roaster is sure to awaken your senses with its unique roast.
Hungary, with its rich traditions and hidden gems like the world’s largest thermal cave system, seems like the perfect backdrop for enjoying a cup of something special.

To kick things off, could you briefly introduce your Awaken

We'd love to hear more about the story behind your brand.

The idea to become a coffee roaster came to mind after I visited WOC in Rimini in 2014.

It was such a great experience to meet legends like Matt Perger and Tim Wendelboe on the beach of Rimini during the Aeropress championship, that I just fell in love with the vibe.

Firstly I started my own coffee shop in 2015, but the Probat roaster was already in backorder.

In 2016 I started experimenting with the Probat on my own, but quickly realized that it was not going to work.

Luckily that year I went to the very first Roast Camp in Estonia, where I met Patrik Rolf Karsson the man behind April Coffee.

He just started April back then.

We had a great talk and he mentioned his consultancy project.

I instantly knew that’s what I needed to quickly level up my roasting knowledge.

At the end of 2016, Patrik spent 3 days at Awaken to help me build a roasting protocol.

Based on that protocol and knowledge I started roasting for the public from the beginning of 2017.

The name Awaken has two meanings to me: awakening your senses and also being mindful.

Mindful of your choices when it comes to both quality and sustainability.

That is what the brand represents.

A mindful choice to awaken.

If you could go back in time, what’s one mistake you would avoid when roasting coffee?

Not using Cropster

What’s the most rewarding part of running a specialty coffee roastery?

That I can create a product that is tasty and makes people feel better after drinking it.

Are there any new trends in the coffee industry that excite you?

I am not much into experimental fermenting and currently, that is the thing.

I still prefer a clean-washed or funky natural over CM or Anaerobic let alone infused coffee.

Do you have a favorite local spot where you grab a coffee or snack when you’re not roasting?

Mesterbike & coffee in Budapest, because I love bikes.

What’s one coffee brewing tip you’d give to someone who wants to get the best out of their beans at home?

Water!

Water is everything!

"Thanks for featuring Awaken, I hope you will like the coffee!"
